I won an ebay auction. Please continue to read this I need help.I won a DVD of the Pink Floyd Pulse Live concert from 1995 I believe.
I asked the seller if this was an authentic item. His/her ad says its not a copy or vcd but it is an original licensed copywith region 0 status. When I tried to play it it would not work in my 5 year old mitsubishi dvd player. Thats the first time that my player refused to play a disc. It gave a message reading, " not an ntsc disc".
I went to good guys and found a JVC dvd player that played it fine and I bought it.
But I still do not believe this disc to be original. The artwork on the disc appears to be do-it-yourself work and the dvd cover art is a copy with white edges. There are no official dvd markings or numbers anywhere on the disc or the binding.
The disc plays fine on the JVC player though and the color quality is ok..not really dvd quality though.
How can I verify this DVD is authentic? Please help as I have a dispute with the seller.
Follow Ups:
Currently there's a huge assortment of counterfeit Pulse DVD's with quite a decent picture quality and even with an alleged 5.1 sound scheme. These could have been derived from either VHS or, which is more likely, from the 1995 LD. I don't affirm that this particular DVD is of that sort of prints, but at least Amazon keeps on referring to Pulse, likewise the other much anticipated item, i.e. 'DSOT' as currently not being produced.
Apparently, as long as Gilmour himself recently stated that the remastering of the sound (should this project is whenever undertaken) would require a great deal of work and this work, perhaps, hasn't even started yet this 5.1 sound option offered by pirated DVD's is a fake or DPL, unless the illegal disks manufacturers have already mastered this sophisticated technology.
As regards the cover quality, sometimes it can hardly serve as a criterium since the polygraphic features of many of the pirated disks could be quite adequate.
I have see few of the albums and DVDs by www.bit4sale.com try their !
it hasn't been released on dvd

It gave a message reading, " not an ntsc disc".Emphasis mine. Sounds like it might be a PAL (european, etc television) encoded disc and not a NTSC (united states, etc television) encoded disc. If your DVD player was the NTSC type, that would explain it.

It might be PAL capable or maybe does PAL--> NTSC conversion. The latter would be a useful feature. Especially if you plan on viewing lots of PAL content.
The disc plays fine on the JVC player though and the color quality is ok..not really dvd quality though.
Maybe it is a home brew version (encoded from vhs, beta, whatever) or perhaps the PAL--> NTSC conversion is causing the degredatation? (If that conversion is indeed occurring.)
I did search on this topic in google. I found this (a listing on Amazon U.S.) which seems to suggest the north american ntsc dvd has not been released yet. But this is by no means an "official" declaration. you may need to follow-up with the record label (or equivalent) to get an official answer. Additional hits in google seems to suggest this north american release may have been planned for March 2003. But I found no hard data.
Google did find some instances of a PAL encoded version of the disc. See http://www.musiccdvideo.com/view/4958.html . There were also several BBS postings that suggested a PAL version was available on DVD. Most of the mentioning RE: the NTSC DVD alluded that either 1. it wasn't released yet or 2. was planned for March 2003.
My gut feeling is that you may have an "authentic" PAL DVD. how authentic "authentic" is, remains to be verified. But is does seem that this DVD does in fact exist, authentic or not. It seems to be passed off as it is the real deal. Perhaps it is a real PAL disc? maybe someone else will have some more thoughts? Also try posting on the avsforums over at AVS. Lots of home theater ad DVD gurus over there.
As I understand, the PULSE dvd has not been released yet. I've been looking for it for some years now, and I haven't found it.As I read before, your problems can be due to a zone problem, this means, that you have a DVD coded for Europe or Australia maybe. Since you found a "zone 0" on the box, this means that your dvd can be played in any dvd around the world. So, it doesn't have to be on NTSC or PAL to present that problems.
I've had some problems with dvds as you have, and always has been because the dvd is not original.
Here are some tips that may help you find out if your dvd is original:
-when you put the disc on the dvd player, it takes more time to start running it, and if you listen closely to the player, you can hear the lens trying to focus.
-can you see anything unusual on the screen when the program pass from one chapter to another?
-pay special attention to the time counter on the dvd player, if it seems to skip sometimes, or reports a time that it's not true
-and the more obvious thing, look at the color of the reading surface on the disc. It has to be as a normal cd, or at least one shade of yellow. You can try to find that dvd on internet (amazon, just to say a site) and you'll see that noone is selling it.
If you ask my opinion, I would say your dvd is not original, but if you have it, original or not, let me say that you're much more lucky as I am!!!
Thanks for you time in following up my question. I will check out the links you provided me and report back to the board if learn more about my dvd.
