I just recently updated my 1994 vintage Denon AVR-2500 with an AVR-1082 (aka AVR-3802) and am unable to get a VCR video signal to pass through to the TV via the monitor out connection using the receiver's video I/O connections. I currently have a Samsung combo DVD/VCR unit and have the DVD connected to the receiver via S-Video and Optical (DVD only side of the unit). Everything works fine with this device. The VCR (using connections on DVD/VCR side of unit and the VCR OUT line) is connected to receiver VCR-1 IN via a composite cable (yellow, red, white). This produces the correct audio but no video. Just to be sure the VCR wasn't bad I hooked up another VCR and got the same results. As an additional test I hooked up my old receiver the same way and it did not work either. What am I missing here?
Follow Ups:
From the receiver's "monitor out" to the television, do you have BOTH an S-video AND a composite cable? If you don't, this may be the problem. For your receiver, each type of signal needs to remain the same from the source to the receiver to the television (VCR > composite cable > receiver I/O > composite cable > television, DVD > S-video > receiver I/O > S-video > television).
If you do, then it's possible your television disables the composite input if you have an S-video cable hooked up to the same input (both composite and S-video connected to Video 1, for example). There may be a selection in the television's menu to disable the S-video input when you want to use the composite input.
Generally, you should bypass the receiver and connect the video outs from the sources directly to the television. It's only if you have too many sources that you would use the receiver as a switcher.
That was exactly my problem.
Is there a menu that needs addressing ie: on/off svhs or composite in/out..?
For best results connect video out directly to the monitor bypassing the amp......
Since you've upgraded your amp your dvd could also use upgrading to seperate components that playback dvd-audio as well........ What monitor...??? SVHS compatible...?
what speakers...?
I resolved the problem by basically understanding exactly how the different video signals are handled by this receiver. Bear with me because I am not an audiophile. It appears that if you have a composite signal entering the receiver it can only go out the composite monitor feed and that has to be isolated on its own composite input on the monitor. The same is true of the component and S-Video outputs as well. Very simple but it really stumped me. I also don't know if this is unique to Denon or if all middle of the pack units have the same discrete video outputs. It appears that the Denon 3803 make a conversion for you but mine does not. The DVD player I have has component and S-Video out so it's not too dated. The TV I have, on the otherhand, is dated and I'll replace it at the next turn of the crank. I always build up inside out.
