While not new to the Asylum, I am new to this wing. So, please excuse me if this is FAQ. I am wondering what consumer oriented technology exists for transferring VHS tapes to the digital medium. I want to transfer "movies" of the kids to CD-R, or whatever is suggested, for a safer and more user friendly storage format.

I just purchased a new digital camcorder, a Sony DCR-TRV 22, that has what's called an analog to digital passthru. Basically you feed an analog audio/video signal from another camcorder or VCR, etc. into the camcorder, where it is converted to digital. Then you can either store it on the DV tape, or download it on to a computer using USB or firewire, to be edited and burned on a DVD.
I haven't done this yet, but plan to copy all my old 8mm tapes this way.Heres a user group that may have more info:
