What length do you hope to purchase for $50?
Have you checked out the online custom cable makers who sell broadcast cables?
Bluejeans
RhinoCables
Avcable
Heartlandcables etc...

Er, I'm looking for a 1M cable to go between my DVD player and the TV. Three plugs? Is this not what it's called? A friend had one in his set up and the picture was better than with an S-Video cable.
No thats the right cable name. Each end is typically colored red, green or blue. All manufacturer sections listed above are good cables. You just didn't specify the lenght of the cable that you need earlier.
Any particular cable you'd recommend? Or is the difference in performance here not as (supposedly) nuanced as that between different audio IC's and speaker cables?
There are a couple places where you can get good information on component cables. First place is the cable asylum forum on this website. Do a search for component cables over there. Chances are if you ask about recommendations they will tell you to build one yourself and give recommendations on what wire to purchase.I'm not too familiar with component cables in that price range but I know of a few fairly well known cable companies that make component cables in that range. Monster Cables and Acoustic Research cables you can find almost anywhere for around $50 at a circuit city or compUSA or Sears. Also Radio Shacks higher end cables.
But there are the others such as MIT DVD-Linq, Audioquest YIQ-X, Tributaries Delta Series cables, Kimber Cables, and Tara Labs makes a component cable in the $50-$70 range that are probably of better build quality. Generally better purchases than the Monster/AR/RS cables if you can find them in your area. Not to mention, the other cables manufacturers listed in previous posts. As far as purchasing on line there is audioadvisor.com, and the Cable Company: http://www.fatwyre.com/video3_03.html, or audiogon.com
My rule of thumb in purchasing cables has always been to take the average cost of the components the cables are connecting and use 10% of that for max price on the interconnecting cable. IE TV=$1000, DVD player = $500, avg=$750 therefore don't get a component cable over $75. If I bought a $6000 HiDefinition plasma I would not want to compromise the picture quality and I wouldn't hesitate to buy a +$300 component cable for that kind of TV investment.
