I found a deal on a 2802 for $400 so I'm finally gonna upgrade from DPL. Yeah, I know I'm late but I'm a cheap SOB.
I'll be hooking it up tonite and plan to spend the rest of the weekend figuring out how to work that big honkin' remote. This is a 6.1 unit with 6 built in amps. I'll eventually be looking to add another Athena Audition B2 when I can find ONE (they are sold only in pairs) but for the forseeable future I'll not be using a center surround.
My question is can this unit be set to go into 5.1 instead of 6.1? I've read the manual but it's not too clear on this, and many other things.
TIA, markw*

I am too looking at a AVR-2802 ( clearing out old stock ) from my studies you should be able to run 5.1 no problem, but I do not have an AVR-2802, just spending lots of time reading about it. Just keep plugging away and you'll get it. The manual is said to be tough to read through, but the brochures say Dolby 5.1 or DTS are both parts of the AVR-2802 features.I am in my own dilema as I have a short list of A/V receivers that I can't decide on. These include the AVR-2802, AVR-3802, AVR-2803, Outlaw 1050, and shooting the wad on an Adcom Amp/ preamp (GTP-830, GFA7300 setup) which is really more than I should look at spending. There are things I like in each unit and there are things I don't like ( ie missing features and/or pricing ) Hmmmm the way I have been mulling over things we will have Dolby 10.2 by the time I make my mind up...LOL
It took about a day of scanning the menus, cursing the remote and a revisit to my DVD'd setup menu and it's going great now. The 5.1 thingie was a simple yes/no to having that speaker connected somewhere in the setup menu.I too was on the fence waiting until things settled down to a fairly common configuration. I had a nice DPL which was fine for many years. I, my wife and my guests all loved what it could do so there was no pressure to jump prematurely.
Fora few years there were constant changes. first, DD. then a year or so later there was DTS. Then, just as they became commodities therewas the 6.1 versions of each. Then, there was DPL2. For one with mucho tapes this was a boon.
Now, I'm about maxed out room wise for speakers. I only need so many watts in a room this size and the useful features war seems to have leveled out for a while.
Now was the time I started looking for good prices and getting this bugger for $400 seemed like the right move at the right time.
If they have the features you need, the power you need and the sound you like, then listen to what your head says. It pretty much boils down to price nowadays anda good closeout sale has always been a clincher for me.
If you live in the NY/NJ metro area, check out the flyers for 6th Ave Electronics in the papers. Oftimes they hace in store specials that never see the internet. This was one of 'em. Likewise, keep an eye on yer local chain stores. Changes coming. BestBuy now sells Athena Audition speakers which beat, hands down, virtually anything else in that store.
