It took about a day of scanning the menus, cursing the remote and a revisit to my DVD'd setup menu and it's going great now. The 5.1 thingie was a simple yes/no to having that speaker connected somewhere in the setup menu.I too was on the fence waiting until things settled down to a fairly common configuration. I had a nice DPL which was fine for many years. I, my wife and my guests all loved what it could do so there was no pressure to jump prematurely.
Fora few years there were constant changes. first, DD. then a year or so later there was DTS. Then, just as they became commodities therewas the 6.1 versions of each. Then, there was DPL2. For one with mucho tapes this was a boon.
Now, I'm about maxed out room wise for speakers. I only need so many watts in a room this size and the useful features war seems to have leveled out for a while.
Now was the time I started looking for good prices and getting this bugger for $400 seemed like the right move at the right time.
If they have the features you need, the power you need and the sound you like, then listen to what your head says. It pretty much boils down to price nowadays anda good closeout sale has always been a clincher for me.
If you live in the NY/NJ metro area, check out the flyers for 6th Ave Electronics in the papers. Oftimes they hace in store specials that never see the internet. This was one of 'em. Likewise, keep an eye on yer local chain stores. Changes coming. BestBuy now sells Athena Audition speakers which beat, hands down, virtually anything else in that store.
