Steve,If I were set on the $500 price range, I would only be looking at the directly marketed Outlaw receiver. I have not actually hear it, but it receives nearly universal praise on all of the web forums. I think it is $500 new direct from the manufacturer.
At a little more than $500, I would consider a used Arcam AVR-100. It gets high marks for its 2-channel music reproduction and gets good marks for it's easy HT setup. It is only 85 w/channel though.
I bought my Sony DA4ES for $699 new from a local "Brick and Mortar" store and I love it! I've owned Many HT receivers including some mega-buck units. The Sony is my favorite for ease of use and HT sound. However, I don't use it for music as I have a separate 2-channel rig.
Enjoy,

I have an Outlaw 1050 and I am extremely pleased with it.It is only 65watts X 6, but in my opinion its blows away anything that you can buy at the large electronic retail stores--very dynamic sound.
