I've been checking out different screen materials in order to choose one to go with my new VPL-HS10 projector. The materials currently on the viewing wall are Da-Lite's Da-Mat , High Contrast Da-Mat, Cinema Vision and High Contract Cinema Vision. While each does something nice for the picture (and I've been changing settings to see the effects on all four materials), I'm coming to think I prefer plain old Da-Mat (gain 1.0). The High Contrast Da-Mat with its lovely blacks bothers me with its meager whites and greyed colors. This is true even when it is the only material I'm looking at. The higher gain materials seem to alter color slightly and diminish sharpness more than slightly. There is a somewhat "sparkly" quality in some scenes that reminds me of the screen my family used to project 8mm home movies on when I was a kid. Not exactly a "looking through a window" experience.
Anyone else had these experiences with screen materials that have a gain of more than 1?

More gain should not mean less resolution. The quality of the picture will be different from screen to screen, especially in how they handle color as luminance is very strongly tied to how those colors are reproduced.Every screen is going to result in a compromise. If you do some poking around on AVSForum, you'll find several threads by a guy who has compared a couple dozen different screens, including some DIY types, professional screens, and professional paint applications to get proper reflectivity. Those are very telling... there's also a lot of discussion about them. Check it out.
