Does anyone have experience with or know anything about a new Philips LCOS TV, Model 44PL9773. It looks awesome, seems to have avoided some of the pitfalls of plasma while preserving its strengths and the price is right. I am a video ignoramus looking for first HDTV. Thanks.

I thought the same thing at first, and yes, Philips is working on a UHP lamp with a 20,000 hour life. At the Philips booth at the last SID convention, they had a specification sheet detailing their two LCOS panels. The panel service life section was listed as a (shockingly disappointing) 20,000 hours. I asked the Philips representatives, and they said that they were "working on improving this" in the future. I'm waiting a while to see the 1920x1080 DLP chips with sequential color recapture before I buy anything (or possibly a Flixel Shutter Array, if those come to production any time soon).
What would you like to know? So far I haven't seen nor heard any downsides at all. It is some absolutely amazing technology and some intense engineering. Do you have specific questions?
The only major pitfall to the technology is that the LCOS panel itself has a rated lifetime of 20,000 hours. Compared to the 100,000+ hours of the DLP devices, that's pretty bad.
the 20,000 hour limit is a reference to extension of future lamps to as much as 20,000 hours, not the life of the lcos chip.
