Hi, we are redoing our rec room and have been having a hard time deciding what to do. We originally were going to with a plasma tv with a wall mount, but as the quality went up, so did the price. We then began thinking about a projection setup instead, but weren't sure what would be the best choice. We are looking to spend between $6,000-$8,000 (We were looking at the Sony 50" plasma) for either a plasma TV or a projection complete setup. First, can anyone tell me the positives and negatives to both setups? Secondly, what costs are normally associated with up keep of the projection system? And lastly, can you tell me what my best bet for a projection unit and screen would be in the above given price range?

They might be a bit of a stretch for you but I'd strongly recommend a new generation dlp like the sharp 10000 series. I've got both the sharp and a sony g70 (different locations) and although the sony does deliver a better picture, the difference isn't that great and the sharp is so easy to set up and deal with compared to the sony. A decent screen (fixed) will run about $600 and that's all you need for a wonderful HT experience. The plasma just isn't in the same league at all. If ambient light is a problem, then go with the dlp over a crt.

A digital projector must be relamped once a year or so (the lamps for my PJ are around $400).CRT projectors require extensive calibration, which is apparently best done by a professional. They will deliver the most film-like image, however.
Keep in mind, CRT projectors are not as bright so you can't watch a film with daylight streaming into the room. They're also big units. With a high-brightness digital machine, ambient light is no problem so long as rays aren't directly hitting the screen.
On the digital side of things, you could also look into D/ILA machines, which are more expensive than both LCD and DLP machines, but are superior.
for your 8K budget you could get a used 7inch or 8inch crt projector with a decient scaler and enjoy quality video images, much better than any plasma, or digital projector. barco 808, NEC PG9, Sony G70 projectors are something to look at.
If you have around 8K to spend there are several front projectors that are great choices, even in well lit rooms. As a guideline we do not sell a home theater front projector with less than 2000 lumens.
If you have more questions, I would like to help you.
Sony is a bit behind in plasma. The best plasmas are built by Fujitsu, Panasonic and Pioneer (in that order). What size screen do you need and where did you get the prices?I'd suggest that if you are going to invest hard-earned money (or was it? ha ha), get yourself over to the AVS Forum. Do plenty of reading and ask questions. The site is a great source for answers and technical information.
