I've recently assembled an HT system that sounds fairly decent: Harman Kardon AVR525 receiver; pair of Avance Epsilon 980 (Front L&R); pair of B&W 301 (Surrounds); B&W LCR600 S3 (Center).
No sub as of yet. I had 2 questions for inmates who are familiar with HT (I'm new to this):
On some broadcasts, I'm hearing (on both the Fronts and Surrounds) a garbled sound in the background (I need to put my ear up to the speaker to really hear it, but it's sort of like whan a radio is tuned to a station, but just shy of the mark. This does not happen on HBO or any DVD's that I've watched.
The other question regards the HT shutting down twice on me. It's 70 watts x 7 or 85 watts x 2. The first time is understandable (I think) as I was slamming it with an INXS CD pretty much at full tilt. The bass and drums on the track could cause it to run out of horsepower with the Avance speakers (which are 4 ohm - the rest of the speakers are 8 ohm). The 2nd time is more puzzling. A DVD of the movie Black Point w/ David Caruso shut the HK down somewhere in the middle. Does not make sense to me as the movie was not particularly loud at that point. I've played several concert DVD's (both in 5.1 and DTS, again at full tilt) and it has kept up right to the end (unlike my ears). Anyway, I'm trying to decide if:
A. I have a defective HK unit
B. I should take the HK back and try something else (at $670, it was a deal, I think)
C. Inmates can point me to a reasonable explanation
All replies welcome ..

Follow Ups:
Regarding your shutdown Problem. I sold HK's at Circuit for two years and they are great receivers but there always seemed to be a batch of defective receivers that would shutdown all the time. If you can take it back to the dealer and exchange it out. Or send it back to hk and have them fix it.
Is it normal to get some hiss (constant) when in any (5 channel, neo,DD, etc) mode?
Also, it seems that in some TV broadcasts, when 2 angles are used, there is hiss when the shot is on one actor and them no hiss when the shot (or camera) goes to another actor, then hiss again when going back to the 1st actor (or camera). Doesn't seem normal to me, but .....

If your AV has pre-out for the front channels, get a used stereo power for the Avance, you wont believe the sound improvement for not much money...

Make sure the HK can actually accept 4 Ohm speakers. Some HT receivers just can't handle the below 4 Ohm dips and resulting current draw that comes with them. Remember, the Ohm rating is more or less an average -- nominal -- rating, so there are peaks and valleys in the actual impedance in relation to frequency.I wired up a Technics surround receiver for my wife a few years ago. The receiver was rated to use 6 - 8 Ohm speakers. I wired the 2-driver sub in parallel (8 Ohms each, parallel showed the receiver 4 Ohms). Sure enough, on loud passages and deep bass effects, the receiver shut down. Reconnected the sub drivers in series (for a 16 Ohm load) and the receiver hasn't shut down once since then. Matter of fact, I was able to actually increase the sub's level for even more "wall shakin'".
UnclePete,
Check ALL of your speaker wires to make absolutely sure that there isn't a tiny little strand of wire that might be touchng from pos to neg. This happened to me once and it would cause my receiver to shut down on loud passages. It took a while to find it because it almost wasn't visible. Just pull them all out and redo them to be sure. Also, because you are running a pair of 4 ohm speakers then be sure that there is ample and plentiful ventilation.
