Posted in cables, but applies to H.T.

HDCP doesn't have anything to do with distance. It's purely copy protection crap... uh, I mean digital rights management (of sorts). As for the DVI question on length, the most I've seen advertised for a DIGITAL connection is 5 meters (around 16ft). To go farther, I think you have to get an adapter which connects to an optical cable which connects to another adapter at the other end (what a stretch!).
I have seen ANALOG DVI cables advertised that go beyond this, but I don't know if that's what you want. Here's a link to a seller of DVI cables (type "dvi" in search fuction). Maybe they can help you out. Also, avsforum.com is a good source for information.
www.dvigear.com also has long length cables that I've had great success with. You can go copper up to 15M or fiber up to 300M.
Thanks, see my link below, don't know if that will work or not,Basically I am trying to determine if there is an advantage in buying a Hi-Def Monitor with the included DVI connection, or save a little bit of cash getting one that omits the DVI.
The way I understand the principle (other than the copyright protection issue) is that a Hi-Def digital signal from a Direct HDTV receiver will go straight to the TV before being converted.(an advantage?)
You're correct, the digital signal stays digital up to the conversion in the HDTV.As long as your new HDTV supports HDCP, you'll be OK. If it doesn't support HDCP (warning: don't get it!), I believe the only DVI-capable connections will be the Bravo D1 DVD player and some computers.
I believe the rule regarding HDCP is this:
If source (DVD player, sat box, etc) has HDCP, receiving devices (scaler, monitor, etc) must be HDCP compliant. If source doesn't have HDCP, it doesn't matter if receiving device is HDCP compliant or not. However, since the future is (unfortunately) copy protection, always be sure the receiving device is HDCP compliant as more and more future sources will undoubtedly have HDCP. Hope that helps.
Looking at the new Sony / Zenith Hi-def/DSS STB and maybe one of those new Sony WEGA KV-34XBR800 wide screen units, pretty sure all have the DVI/HDCP. Should be a GIANT step up from my 12+ year old Mitz. 35"er.
Good-quality Cardas or Belden cable should do fine over 50'.
Found these.... perfect length
