Amazon is selling a Toshiba 27AF43 TV for under $300. Does anyone know how this model differs from the highly-regarded 27AF42 (which sells for more)? I can't find a reference to it on the Toshiba website. Is it a new model that replaces the AF42?
Follow Ups:
Check www.toshiba.ca for spec sheets on the AF42 & AF43.I just bought two 27AF43s and the picture is fantastic. The AF43 has BBE Audio Enhancement which really makes a difference.
The differences are the AF43 does NOT have Picture Modes or Dynamic Quadruple Focus but the AF43 DOES have INVAR shadow mask, 16:9 mode (which I don't know how to use or not sure how it works), separate controls for Bass/Treble/Balance, BBE, and Stable Sound, as well as a front headphone jack. Colour temp control is available on the AF43.
Sorry about my mistake about the 27AF43 not having the Color Temperature Control. The Canadian site seems more current although I haven't checked the US site since they could't give me the information I requested last month. I guess the specs apply to both countries.
The two features that I thought might contribute to definition were the Vertical Contour Correction and the Dynamic Quadruple Focus that are apparently absent in the 27AF43. They were originally touted as very important. I am interested in playing DVDs.
But the proof is in the pudding, if the 27AF43 appears to have as good a picture as the 27AF42 then it does and the two features I was concerned with must not be worth anything after all.
Well, I've had the chance to use an AF43 for 3 weeks. I am finding the video quality is really dependant upon the video source. My local cable is sometimes very good and sometimes not that good and it definitely shows in the quality of the picture. Overall, the colours are really quite good and are easily changed with the Color Temp Controls to suit your taste. The picture is sharp. The silver cabinet has not been a distraction in watching this set.I am using Colorstream (component video) cables from my Toshiba DVD and the picture is excellent - very clean, crisp, and clear. On my second AF43 set downstairs, I am using an S-video cable and it too displays a very fine picture.
VCR movie playbacks are also quite good but of course no where near the quality of a DVD.
The AF43 has reasonaable sound given the 5W speakes. There is no sub-bass system (like the AF42) but the BBE (not found on the AF42) dramtically improves sound quality. Surround sound makes a difference as well.
My only dispappointment with the AF43 is that it has "fixed" audio out rather than "variable" audio out. With variable audio out you automatically control the sound on your audio sound system with your TV remote - when you change the sound on your set you automatically change the sound on your audio sound system. Unfortunately, the AF43 audio out is "fixed" meaning you need to control sound from the sound system separately from the TV sound system. As far as I know, there is no way to simply turn off the TV speakers.
My only other disappointment is that text at the bottom of the screen is not always crisp & clear but after shopping for flat screens I find this is common amongst many flat screen TVs.
Why did I but two AF43s? Quite simply, price and performance. At $509 Canadian for each set, I could not go wrong. If you want a good basic flat screen then I recommend taking a look at this set.
I've tried out both a Toshiba 27AF43 and currently a 24AF43. Both
of these sets had a very annoying tendency to have a slight rolling
motion on crawler lines such as found on CNN, FOX, or MSNBC. On
both sets, in the lower right hand corner and about 1/4 of the way
over from the left of the screen you would see this effect. It was
so annoying on the 27 inch set I took it back. I'm still contemplating doing this with the 24 incher, but everything else
works great. In an earlier post it was noted this is a common
problem with flat panel screens. Is this true?
Toshiba e-mailed back to me that the horizontal resolution was not available from them, which I think is strange. Their web site had standard resolutions listed for all their sets according to the screen sizes on the site but the 27AF43 was not included last I looked.I was considering the 27Af42 also. From what I can find out the 27AF43 does not have these features which the 27AF42 did have: Vertical Contour Correction, Dynamic Quadruple Focus, and Color Temperature Control as well as a Sub Bass System and some other things. I guess the first two features would affect the picture the most if they ever ment anything. I'm now considering a Sony.
Here's what I got when I inquired about the resolution for the 27AF43:Dear Ben,
Thanks for writing!
We appreciate your interest in Toshiba.
Unfortunately, with more and more attention given to HD displays,
non-HD
displays are rarely giving their lines of resolution. The new model will also have 700 lines of resolution.

Please write back if I can assist you further.

I was curious to know how many lines of horizontal
resolution does the 27AF43 television provide? I saw
that the 27AF42 provides 700-line horizontal
resolution, but I can't find this information for the
27AF43. Any help would be appreciated.Thanks.

Hey guys,I have the AF43 and did quite a bit of research before I bought. First, I want to suggest you check out www.agoraquest.com. It's a Sony review site that's quite good. It's very active and the trouble shooting forum has lots of good information about many makes and models of TV.
Next, the 27AF42 was quite well regarded by consumer reports and loads of user reviews I read. It was the front runner in my research before I saw the 43. 16:9 compression was one of my criteria and partially swayed me to the 43.
Essentially, if you configure your DVD player to display at 16:9 (letterbox mode), 16:9 compresses the video into the 16x9 aspect ratio and takes better advantage of your resolution. I'm no TV tech, so I can't explain it much better than that but I can say that it makes a difference. My DVDs look great.
The 43 is not manufactured in Japan. This largely accounts for the lower price. I can't recall where the manufacturing is done but it might be mexico. Again, I'm not sure of that. When I saw the 43 retailing for about $550 canadian and much in store evaluation didn't reveal any serious problems with the image, I bought one.
Honestly, the image isn't perfect but it's close. After a couple of weeks I'm very satisfied with the product for the price.
On the topic of Sony, I had a KV-27FS300 that I returned to the store due to some serious quality issues. After some reading I'm convinced that last year's wegas had major design flaws that make them pretty much lemons in my mind. Those issues are well documented in the forums I mentioned above. There's now a KV-27FS310 that at least one owner is reviewing well at agoraquest.
That's my 2 cents worth hope it's worth something to you guys.
