In searching for a new display monitor to replace my 12 year old directview TV, I have noticed that most of the units out there now have multiple component, s-video, composite, and now even DVI inputs, many with their own color setting memories, and even dedicated input selector buttons on the remotes (as opposed to one input switching selector).Since the best PQ from each different video source would be a direct feed to the monitor, using the multiple inputs, seems like the time has come for a high quality audio only pre/pro. Any comments?

I think audio only multi-channel preamps are the only way to fly. I purchased one of the first units off the line of the McCormack MAP-1. I have been very pleased and it has allowed me to successfully integrate Home Theater and Hi-End two channel in one easy to use great sounding system. Service from McCormack (Conrad Johnson) has been first rate. I'm surprised more audiophiles have not explored this approach?-CB
sorry, corrected link below.
Agreed. Taking out the cost of video switching and associated sonic liabilities makes some sense.I went with a separate multichannel analog preamp to support my SACD habit since my pre/pro (Proceed AVP) did not support 6-channel analog bypass. I could use the DVD player to do the DD/DTS decoding (am doing this right now since the pre/pro went into the shop) but I will still need the pre/pro for audio from other source components (e.g. cable box, HDTV receiver, etc.). The Pre/Pro does not currently have component video switching; I'd have to get a separate box for this function as well.
I'm in the middle of evaluating an EAD DVDMaster's audio performance to see if I can "lessen" the need for a pre/pro (6-channel balanced outputs are a good sign IMHO). Too bad this piece does not have any digital inputs. It does several other things pretty well. I was quite impressed with film-like video quality when combined with a Sharp 10000 DLP projector but that's another subject (I'm in the hunt for a good HDTV solution).
Also in a similar situation. Using a Sony TAP preamp/ICBM and the internal DD/DTS decoding of my DVD/SACD player for movies.I am getting ready for a major video upgrade, (in relationship to what I have now) adding a Hi-Def DSS/STB to feed a new Hitachi 57 Hi-Def RPTV, via DVI cable, as soon as the new 2003 models hit the CC/Sears floor.
Since I will need another DD/DTS decoder for the STB, for right now, thinking about trying one of those $170 Pro media DD 5.1 units to hold me over until the next big upgrade.
