I tend to look down upon any DVD/VCR combo as the level of quality of both pieces tends to suffer in exchange for the efforts made to fit two components in the space of one. Also, when one breaks, you either have to limp along or replace both units. If you barely use videotapes and don't already have a VTR and you have limited space available, maybe they're ok. Otherwise, however, I would strongly recommend checking out separate units.
As for Allegro, I have no knowledge of their products and wouldn't be able to recommend them. I have had good success in the past with Toshiba and Samsung, though, and generally feel as though they're safe.
Follow Ups:
Mine lasted barely 30 days after the 30 day warantee. VCR is fine. DVD is fried. Don't waste your money on this item.
I have had one for several months and have had no problems what so ever. You can hack it (real simple) to play svcd and vcd and there is supposed to be a region 0 hack and a macrovision hack, I however would like to find the copyprotected hack, if one exists.
