Be nice guys, OK kick my b%$^'s in.I notice a lot of less than friendly comments about Sony. I am not a Sony fan but am stuck with some at this time. Can someone explain my problem or confusion here. First the story....
I have a SONY SCD-CE775 SACD player that has been modified and am pleased with, now here is the problem. I really do not have anything against BestBuy sales people but they do not seem (some of them) very well educated on the items they are selling. Due to a temporary move I wanted a low cost 5.1 receiver that I could play my SACD through. I saw an optical out on my SACD and purchased a STR-DE595 which has an optical SACD/CD input. After much fussing and frustration I read in small print in the manual this optical option is not available on this model, so back I went to return the unit for on that has this enabled. In the meantime a salesman gets into the conversation and claims none of the Sony products will work with the optical in. After much debate I left with an STR-DE895. This will recoginize some SACD's and when set to auto/2 input switches to optical input which appears to work fine but not on all disks. After seeing all the negative feelings on Sony what could I have purchased in the same price range (around $375.00)that would have been better. I might still be able to return it for something else. Thanks

The Harman Kardon AVR series is a good choice for your needs. They have the 6 channel analog input you need for SACD, along with a lot of digital ins/outs via optical or digital coax.
Thanks everyone for the information.
My understanding is that SACD will only feed 44.1/16 signal out. To get the full SACD quality you need to use all the outputs on the player to the receiver. In other words, a set of 5 interconnects. Try posting in the High Rez forum for more info.
SACD will not output in any digital form, unless it is between two proprietary units, such as the Denons. If a player outputs 44.1/16, that signal is redbook CD. Note that a hybrid SACD also has a redbook layer, which will output digitally.
You know that SACD only outputs through the analog outputs of the player, there is no universal digital I/O hi-rez format yet. I assume the digital output of the player can be use for CDs, you may have to change some settings in the audio options menu. (I own a Sony DVD/SACD/CD changer, and can configure the digital outputs for DD/DTS decoding or just plain redbook.)
Are the few SACDs that work thru the digital output hybrids..that would explain it, what you're hearing is the CD potion of the SACD disc.
My line should have said "I read in small print in the manual this optical option is not ENABLED on this model, NOT I read in small print in the manual this optical option is not available on this model, also I would like the optical in feature if available on other systems.
