There was a thread that started a couple of weeks ago regarding 5.1 sound via the cable company's standard-issue HDTV set-top box. I have one coming in on Monday and am wondering if the shows that AREN'T in 5.1 will at least be in Dolby Pro Logic. I guess in other words, what is the default if the show is not in 5.1? I can't imagine it would be two-channel. Any words of wisdom would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!(Just FYI, cable company is Time Warner and the location, San Diego.)

I have Cox San Diego with the Scientific Atlanta 3100HD box-via the dig coax, I get some programs in true 5.1 (mainly movies on Encore, Flix, etc), a lot of programs in 2.0 stereo and quite a few channels with no audio at all (although there is stereo available via the analog L/R outputs). All the HDTV channels output 5.1, although they often utilize only the L/R front.

All programs should come in Dolby Digital with the HDTV set-top when you use the optical or coax digital output. It will say on the flipbar whenever you change channels what type of audio that particular program has. It will usually have the Dolby symbol with a D next to it for Dolby Digital stereo, or say 5.1 if it's a movie in 5.1. If you want Pro Logic, just run an analog stereo pair out in addition to the digital. With the analog stereo out, you will have your receiver do the Pro Logic.
I can't answer your question specifically, but I know that Pro-Logic II sounds great with any 2 channel source (even FM radio). That's what I would use as a default surround mode.Does the cable box have any digital outputs? If so then will your decoder automatically sense what type of decoding is available?
I would assume that it does, though, which would mean yes, auto-sensing of format by my receiver.
