Many tvs today have multiple inputs, with discreet selector buttons on the remotes to switch, so there's less need to run the video signals thru a receiver, instead straight from source to video monitor, for better performance. Are you aware of the Gov. mandate to switch over to a totally digital video system by 2007? Right now they are basically giving away standard def. analog 4:3 screen sets, due to the availability of widescreen units. So you could buy one of these assuming that it was "disposable", to be replaced with a widescreen/hi-def unit later.
Not sure if your budget will allow a widescreen now..although that would be better for your DVD playback. Someone else may be able to help you out there.
