Help! We've had a base model Sony DVD player for two years. Our television is a 36" Sony WEGA flatscreen. I'm really starting to notice that DVDs aren't truly black and some other picture problems. I want to upgrade.
The audio runs through:
Arcam FMJ CD-23T
a Rogue 99 Magnum with vintage Sylvanias,
Bryston 4B-ST power
Thiel CS 2.3 speakersInterconnects are all Cardas Golden Reference, powercords are Shunyata research and PS Audio through a PS Audio P300 for sources, including the DVD.
Yesterday I picked up a Denon DVD 1600 as a floor model at Tweeter for $348. I went on a whim and when presented with the deal, I bit.
I noticed a much better picture, but I want to do better with the DVD sound.
I have been thinking about a used Arcam Diva 88 DVD for a while. I was very happy with the Diva 92 CD player before getting the FMJ-23. Economics prevents a full out junp to the Arcam FMJ DVD player.
So, should I leave well enough alone with the Denon or jump at a used Arcam?
Again, this is for DVD movies only, but my wife and I enjoy them tremendously so an upgrade is possible.

Has anyone used this into their hi-fi for an improvemnt of downmixed 5.1 -> PCM? I'm debating doing away with my plethora of speakers to simplify to strictly 2 CH (2nd time I've done this).Running my 999ES (analog out L/R downmixed from 5.1) straight into my amp (with volume control) I'm noticing the center channel information seems to be a little lacking, as the L/R speakers still have the ambiance information from the center voices, but yet, there's no center channel. Suppose to be a downmixed 5.1 -> PCM, but somehow I think the downmixing is pretty pritive?
I have done a couple things that have improved my A/V setup based on the following;
1. Upgraded my modest Pioneer DV-533k internal 27mhz clock (cheap??) with LC Audio Clock and power supply. Cost approx. US$300. Picture output is much more "stable" and sound quality sounding less "digital" and more coherent whether it's DTS, 5.1 or PCM 2 channel stereo.
2. Use a PS Audio's Ultimate Outlet to feed power to the TV. Picture quality has improved. Cost approx. US$400; Colors are more vivid, picture has more depth or 3D like, blacks are blacker....etc.
I do not have "specialised" cables though for the above setup but probably this will be my next upgrade to reap the benefits of what I have done so far.
Enjoy and hope this helps.
The other day a few members from a local AVforum brought their budget players to compare, using my system, I have FMJ DV27, before I had the DV88, and the difference between the two was not much, particularly regarding sound...We tested Sony, Toshiba, Aiwa, Pioneer and Onkyo, playing mainly Stingīs all this time DVD, all sounded substantially worst than my Arcam, meaning they didnīt even sound hifi, regarding image, some where quite close, using a 32" Loewe...
Now, my Arcam improved a lot sound wise with a VDH Mainsstream PC and an Apogee Wide-Eye digital IC, I recomend you try them if you get the Arcam...

One of the best DVD-A players around, rated A in Stereophile, is the Toshiba SD-9200, originally priced at $2,000.00 and now available on-line everywhere for $600-700. It got a bad reputation because the loading drawer vibrated. This problem is easily fixed by having a repair shop install Toshiba part # 79070496, a rubber damper kit. My shop charged $80 for this. For the combined price of whatever, this tank can be yours.
