Hello all,I'm in the market to buy a television, however I'm stuck with an entertainment center that I must use for the television. And the width of it constrains me.
My question is: Do I buy a 32" Flat screen or a 36" regualr screen television.
The room that I'm using it in is about 24 feet long, so that is the furthest distance from the television that I would need.
Is there a ration between room size and television size?
Follow Ups:
I have a 34" wega Sony Flatscreen HD tv, and the picture is great! My British friend visiting wishd the quality was that good in the UK.
Gah! Scrap the entertainment center altogether and just go with a front projection system. If your room is 24 feet long, I'm sure it's fairly wide as well... just think about a screen 8-10 feet wide!Probably not quite the answer you had in mind, but you need to ask yourself if you want to base your TV viewing around your furniture or around your TV... Entertainment centers take up too much space, restrict your equipment choices, and don't allow for enough heat dissipation for the gear once they're in place. That and with a screen you have the flexibility of having a roll-down screen (manual or electric) or hiding the screen with 'window treatments' or something. get some decent shelves for your media, etc. and your room is opened up a lot more.
Head on over to www.avsforum.com and check out the groups there under display devices for more tv recommendations. While you're there, check out the cheap digital projectors. The new Sanyo PLV-Z2 sounds like it's cooking...
Great advice. Get some nice equipment racks at audioadvisor.com, and a front projection system. Don't rely on those "calculators" for how big your tv "should" be for your room. They never seem right to me.
1. There is no such thing as flat CRT. Any so called flat CRT is acually worse than ANY standard CRT in terms of engineering to the best. FORGET about flat CRT it just does not exist yet. There is a way to do it, but it is so complicated to the point that circuitry that would drive this CRT is still beyond our technology.
2. Viewing distance for CRT (standard) PAL is 6 diagonal lenght of the screen. For NTSC (I could not find specs anywhere), but since NTSC is worse than PAL, distance should be even bigger. I would estimate to 6.5 lenghts of the screen.
Everything made for PAL is made with this distance in mind. This provides best picture and details. For NTSC, well... it's american systems, this means no rules, no standards, no respect to consumer.
not sure on what's the idea screen size for a TV at that distance. i know with front projectors you usually see 1.5-2x distance as the screen width (not diagonal). But that's for movies and not general use. I suppose it's a matter of preference.
So Do I understand you correctly that I should go for the 32" flat instead of the 36" regular?
I recommend a Sony Wega in the 36 inch size. The 16:9 enhanced mode is the closest thing to HDTV you will find. Great picture!
Friend of mine has a top-of-the-line 32" set and the picture is marvelous, especially on well-transferred DVDs. Closest thing to HDTV I've seen. And I have HDTV @ home.
