Meniscus Audio makes a front firing 12" powered sub that you can add a slave 12" on to in case you want double the fun. I think they call it UMBRA and it was about $600-700 for the two. Yes that is two 18.5x18.5x20 inch boxes but of course you have to run the speaker wires from the powered sub over to the slave sub. I own a pair and they go really low(spec to 18Hz). The amp has it's own equalization optimized by the guys at Meniscus to get the extension as flat as possible. One problem, they are ported on the back, reflex type. If you are a bass purist and want the transient phase response then go for a sealed cabinet. Depends on if you want it for movies & loud music that rumbles or for acoustical music like string bass.
I like my subs but I am more of a music guy so I would probably go for the sealed box if I had it to do over again. But hey, I sure can pump more bass than I ever need for movies like Twister, Appolo 13 etc.
Follow Ups:
This is also a 12inch sub but with a leaner yet better transient presenting sound in a sealed box.NHT 1259 Subwoofer Kit with KG5230 300W Amplifier $552.90.
from Madisound.com from, you guessed it, Madison, WI.I think that they sell them already built for a little bit more but they are really easy, depending on your experience, to put together yourself if you want to save a few bucks.
