I just picked up a basic HDTV tuner from Samsung. It has a DVI output which mates up nicely with the DVI input on my Sony 16:9 XBR TV. I have a partially assembled $20 RadioShack UHF yagi antenna laying flat on the glass dining room table pointed toward Denver. The coax cable is running across the floor, up over the sofa, and to the back of the Samsung tuner. PBS is especially impressive and Jay Leno in HDTV is very sharp too. I'm getting only 4 channels at this point but I should get a couple more once I place the antenna outside on a 10-foot pole. The HDTV picture is truly incredible... better than any DVD I own!
Follow Ups:
I'm not sure if it was worth the $400 for the Samsung OTA tuner so I *may* trade it in for full credit toward a DirecTV satellite & HDTV OTA tuner combo. I don't get Discovery HD but the local PBS channel is broadcasting almost exclusively with new digital HD content... mostly scenic travel footage from around the world. From what I can tell, most local stations are still transmitting low power from various buildings downtown until they start transmitting from high atop Lookout Mountian which overlooks the entire metro area and suburbs. The Lookout Mountain site was being protested by some environmental group and citizens in Golden where the mountain is located (same Golden Colorado where they make that yellow stuff they call beer).
Yeah, that Broncos / Raiders game was a blast, unless you're an Oakland fan!
Born & raised in the San Francisco Bay Area's east bay just east of Oakland.
Got a chance to watch much of Denver's shellacking of Oaktown last nite on HDTV via digital cable set-top box (if Plummer keeps playing like that your home team is going to be tough and will go deep in the playoffs. A big if, I know). Except for very few (maybe 3) instances of "smudging" -- hard to explain, not the pixelation and tiling I get with other channels, just like a smaller square box inside the picture froze for maybe half a second, appeared to start "wiping," then the picture reassembled perfectly -- it was absolutely perfect. Colors, spot on. Clarity, outstanding. Depth of field, wonderful. On a large 16x9 set, you get a MUCH better sense of just how fast the game moves and how quick the players are. AWESOME!!!Can you get Discovery channel OTA? In my opinion that's the shiznitz for HDTV as much of the programming is digital from beginning to end and the photography is stunning.
to be in an area where there are actually HDTV broadcasts! I have seen one or two and they are clearly superior to traditional TV.
We have about ten HD channels on the cable here... I can't reliably receive ANY OTA - too many tall trees, so the picture comes and goes. But they guy I know pulls in over a dozen from the air.
I hope to pick up more OTA HD channels once I get the Yagi fully assembled and outside on a pole. I'll keep the quad-shield coax as short as possible due to dB loss at UHF. Denver is still far behind most other metro areas for HDTV but the few stations I am presently able to receive are quite impressive. It's like looking at a large glossy Kodak print vs. a color newspaper photo. It's like listening to high-end audio vs a transistor radio. ;-)
I checked out the broadband "BAT TV" interviews... Very cool Victor! I wish more audio manufacturers would take better advantage of this 'multimedia' technology.
If you love sports you are in luck. Besides that there isn't all that much to watch - soaps... silly TV movies, that sort of things. But good luck to you - your area might have something interesting, who knows - it's fun working with long range TV antenna - I have done that before... a 30' pole on the two-story house roof, and still no reception - threes too tall. But it is mostly flat around Denver, I remember, so you have better chance.
