few dvd movies have 2ch sound track. no problem in that case.but the majority of dvd movies seems to have only 5.1 track.
i have denon 2900 connected to ML383 which is a 2ch integrated amplifier.
i did, however, set up the denon 2900 in stereo mode(not in multi-ch mode in which 5 or 6 speaker set up is required)
here's my question.
when 5.1 track is played, does my 2900 take it and down-mix it to 2ch?
or am i hearing only 2 ch out of 5.1 ch?
thanx for ur comment in advance...

This is something that I was hoping to do - get rid of my home theater gear (less speakers). So I tried doing this, downmix 5.1 -> 2 channel using the RCA 2 channel outputs on my Sony 999ES going directly into my 2 channel sysetem.I noticed that there was some ambient voice cues that were downmixed into the 2 channel signal which left a center channel hole in the sound. This was specifically noticable in voice tracks. It was very bizarre in my system.
My conclusion was that modern 5.1 soundtracks do not necessarily downmix perfectly to 2 channel audio. Perhaps the older 5.1 DVDs when DVD was a new media. At the time I only had a 2 channel system, and yes this worked great! Just like a HiFi VCR. But I think with today's modern DVD production process, they probably utilize the 5.1 mixing to greater extent.
I would be very curious to hear about other people's experiences with this. I may be out in left field here, but this was my conclusion. Has anyone else noticed this?
I have a stereo HT, and 5.1 mixes sound fine on it-great in fact.
I actually prefer many/most of the 5.1 mixes through stereo than the 2 channel mixes.

would be to get a DVD with a 5.1 channel test signal, and play it through your setup. If you don't want to buy a test DVD, some movies you can rent have a THX optimizer in the audio set up menu, which is the same thing. I'm thinking maybe the movie "Holes" had it, which we just rented recently.BTW, very fun movie! (And I didn't realize Sigourney Weaver had so many freckles!)
Also "French Connection 2" has this (and a few video tests) in the extra features menu.
It will lopp a VOB track that sends a signal to all 5 channels one at a time and then the LFE channel. Most likely the manual for your Denon 2900 would answer that quick question enough though.

I would think that as long as you are using the analogue RCA outputs from the DVD player, you are going to receive a 2-channel mix (stereo output). It's when you are using a digital output to a processor that you are going to receive a multichannel mix, and then you would have to downmix it via the processor. Some DVD players with built-in decoders also have RCA outs for each surround channel. Don't use those with your integrated. For your setup, there should be nothing to configure.
