Did you have digital or regular analog cable prior to switching to DISH? How does the picture quality compare on regular non-premium channels on DISH vs cable?I've been on plain ole analog cable for many years and finally decided to try 'digital' cable with the digital cable set-top-box. Surfing channels on the digital cable box is very slow and the picture quality is no better than analog cable EXCEPT that the premium channels are extra sharp. I rarely watch the premium channels so I took the diital cable box back and I'm on regular analog cable again.
I'm thinking of switching to DISH or DirecTV if their picture quality is better for regular non-premium channels.
Follow Ups:
With Digital cable only the premium channels are broadcasted in digital(ie HBO, SHO, MAX....). With Satalite all channels are sent via digital even your Local stations if they are offered. I use Dish with the PVR (Tivio style) reciever and have been happy. Although I have had to return my PVR twice, due to bad harddrives, but customer service was great received newer reciever very quickly. Picture quality is great, as long as you can except digital signal. Also make sure they offer loacal channels in your area.
Thanks! That's good information. I didn't know that digital cable was only digital on the premium channels. Makes sense though since I didn't notice ANY improvement what so ever on the regular channels and had to deal with the inconvenience of the slow digital cable set-top-box to boot. I'll be looking into Dish and DirecTV.
I had regular cable before Dish. Dish is by far better picture. Also with satellite you can get DD 5.1 sound, which previously was not offered even on digital cable. Not sure if digital cable has caught up yet. I like the Channel surfing menu too. It's fast on Dish, never seen a digital cable though. My Dish unit boots up fast, but is slow shutting down.TIVO is supposed to be more powerful than Dish's version, but that's mostly for searching types of programs to record. I don't care about that when mine's free every month!
