I am new to home theater and currently looking to upgrade from my cheesy JVC a/v receiver and RCA dvd player. I have been collecting vintage gear and have great appreciation for quality products no matter their age. Doing the vintage thing has allowed me to purchase great high end audio equipment in the secondary market at a fraction of the original cost. I understand that home theater receiver and dvd player technology is still changing quickly. But, are there some good finds in the used market of highest quality gear. if so could they be worth while or will they be made obsolete to quickly. I have been considering a YAMAHA DSP-A1 (sold new in 1998 for almost $3,000 can now be had on ebay for < $600) or a RX-V2095 would I be better off buying new in the $600-$1000 range and how would new compare to the used DSP-A1thanks,

I would suggest thinking about doing what I did.I bought a brand new Toshiba DVD/ DVD Audio player, for less than $ 240.00.
Using the analog out, I split the signal up. L and R front to a Mac c28, subwoofer to an Akai amp, center and rear to an aditional amp.
I was able to utilize vintage stuff just sitting around.
Movies are in Dolby Digital , DVD Audio in 6 channel, and everything sounds great.
I set the volume on the C 28, than bring up the center and rear via remote from the listening position.
I have a JVC 5.1 a/v now run into vintage speakersFRONTS

but this is not a must only a plus.I have plenty of vintage equipment for 2 channel listening.Wuold I get alot more quality (bang for the buck)if I went to the used market? and what would you recomendfor around $600-$1000 bew or used ? maybe the YAMAHA DSP-A1?
defndum,"I would like to have an a/v reciever that would double as a 2/channel"
Get the YAMAHA DSP-A1.There were a lot of good reviews on it's 2 channel ability. I use the 2095 for home theater but use tubes for stereo.
My opinion is you can get great 2 channel music out of older equipment, but to get the best multichannel Home Theater playback, you need the newer digital surround formats, Dolby Digital at least. Not sure what the Yamaha has, can say from my experience that all the other DSP modes that are offered in these older units will get tiring very quickly, and become unused features.A lot of guys here will get a decent home theater receiver, feed it's L/R signal into an auxiliary input (or home theater bypass, if available) of a high quality preamp, for the best of both worlds.
home theater, and is this going to be combined with your vintage stuff or seperate?
Hi: You have noticed that used equipment is usually sold for a big reduction over new. So there are lots of choices. I would look for a Rotel, NAD, B&K or other reciever or seperates. Finding a high quality DVD player will be a bit more of a challenge as people tend to hang on to them & thus there is more demand on the used market IMO. The high end Japanese products are also a good bet. The main thing is get the best DVD player you can find, then the best reciever.
