i am getting a great deal on a sharp lcd projector(new in box). the problem is it is in a different country and i can't see it in action. any advice on what i should do? i'm basically getting it at about forty% of list and am thus tempted. i have zero experience with and no knowledge of home theatre.
Projection video is not as straightforward as you might think. This household jumped in heavily last year & it took me 6 months to get a top picture on some formats. Also note that the Sharp you are referring to is designed for power point etc presentations from computer. How well it could handle the moving image is a different proposition altogether.
Bottom line, there is no cheap way to good video. Most people are better off spernding dollars on a bigger TV, maybe a rear projection one, than on a front projector. The best quality front projectors have 3 guns not one like your Sharp. Anyway, I've not been terribly impressed with Sharp's quality - their hi fi VCR I owned some years ago had a tuner with obviously poorer resolution than the other Panasonic (National). They might be better now but be careful. Buiying sight unseen in an area you are ill informed about does not produce bargains, only heart aches!! Sorry to be so negative but you did ask.
Hope we have helped

I guess I'll wait. I was thinking of using my basement as a viewing area and making my own speakers. I have a whole bunch of amps sitting around and a dvd player as well. But no screen or processor yet. I guess I've got a whole bunch to learn first. Thanks. longfellow
longfellow,Try Tom Young at Encore Video Projectors out of New Hampshire. You can find him at www/hometheaternet.com
Tom was nothing but helpful when I bought my Sony 1252Q in August. I love the picture & the service is exemplary. For about $3200 I got a data grade projector & line doubler. I love the picture.
Good luck.
Do you have a high quality projection screen? Probably not. I would not go near it, for several reasons. You don't know about home theatre. The cost of setup will be much higher than the cost of the LCD projector. You will probably need a seperate room or at least one where you can turn off the lights & close the blinds to watch a movie. The list goes on. Get some background on setting one up & then decide if you want it.
Thanks for your advice. Can you recommend any website for further info?
I'm sorry I don't know of any websites. But if you bought a copy of Stereophile's Guide to Home Theatre you will find useful information there. You may find a site from a manufacturer's links page.
