Finally bought a HDTV which has both DVI and component video inputs.
But haven't invested in any such cables.Quick question - what's the difference between component cables, and good composite cables (which I have several)? Just curious if using three composite cables would work?
Follow Ups:
There's no difference. An awesome, fairly low-cost solution (when compared to some others out there) is to use Belden 1695A for composite and/or 3 runs of it for component. The component video will look much, much better than composite video quality, when using the same cables. There are many vendors offering this cable, shoot me an email and we can talk more about it if you want.Hope this helps!
Not having any component cables, out of curiosity, I tried three audio cables with RCA connectors (Kimber Kable Silver Streak). Looks ok, but no better than the S Video (Tara Labs) cable I had used before.Wonder what the differences are between audio and video component cables.
Video cables are coax design with a specific impedence, plus they would contain shielding for both RF and LF blocking. Some would even come with impedence matched connectors for signal integrity.Audio cables could be of any design, from twisted pair, unshielded, 2 completely seperate wires, coax, etc. So it all depends on how the audio cable were build.
Also, progressive output from source component could only be transmitted via component connections, not S-video.
Just wondering.
but you could get sub-par performance and/or degradation.
When the projector was installed here, 3 runs of good quality commercial video cable (yes it is all basically the same) was installed. After awhile I bit the bullet and purchased expensive Audioquest component cable and there was a distinct improvement. So yes, the quality of cable is important provided the quality is there to be transmitted. But just how obvious the improvement will be will depend on picture size and other factors. See if you can borrow some cabling before laying out large dollars as there is no guarantee you will see any improvement.
I have used composite in the past for component and it works. I imagine I will be crucified for admitting to it but it is a functional solution. I have since upgraded twice, as recently as today to a monster ultra thx. I swear I have the most beautiful picture ever. Sony kv-36xbr800 with a pioneer elite dv-c36. Now with better cables hooking them to each other.
when you upgraded from composite to "true" component video cables?Being somewhat distrustful of the whole cable mumbojumbo, I am curious if there is any real difference between composite & component cables.
All component cables are just three composite cables bundled together for convenience. The monster component ables are good, tributaries better and nordost best IMO.
