My TV only has one set of RCA's for input. I've connected my DVD player and VCR via a Y-connector to the TV. Since only one unit will be on at a time, it seemed OK, but I do wonder if there's any risk of the vid signal at the output jack of the inactive unit causing trouble.

Any one source would be feeding both the input of the TV and output of the other source. You would, at the least, encounter signal degration due to impedence change.Turning one unit off does not mean that component's output is disconnected. It could even cause incoming signal to flow to ground.
You can relax if you can always be confident at least one is powered off. However that is a big "if" (particularly if someone else inadvertently switches both on), so I would purchase or make an inexpensive switching box. What you are doing is a bad practice and you risk possible expensive damage to save a few dollars.
