ok, this is my first foray over to the dark, I mean video, side of the boards. I'm a 2-channel guy, at heart. I don't have a TV or a DVD player, I've been living without TV for over a year now, and it is great. Still, I miss watching movies. So, I'm thinking I would like to get a TV. I went to Circuit City the other day to look, and I was surprised to see that there were some decent looking RP wide-screen TVs of decent size for <$1,500. What brands do you guys like in this range? I'll probably put together a surround sound system eventually, but for now I'll probably just use the 2 channel system. My apartment is too small to accomodate a full on surround system anyway, but I'll be moving in August to a bigger place, so I'd like to get a decent sized TV. Thoughts? Comments?
Follow Ups:
We just shopped for a digital RPTV the other day. We went with Hitachi, after considering everything from price to features. The '51F500' was $1799 at 'HHGregg' store, and you can usuall talk the salesperson down to your range. 'Consumers Reports' magazine rated the Hitachis the most trouble-free of all brands, and they have a killer picture! Happy hunting!
I recommend a digital SONY wide screen rear projection of 36" or more. Digital becausa it will accept input freom a progressive scan DVD player (progressive scan gives a better picture). Also be sure immediately to have the TV "calibrated" by an ISF (Imaging Sciencve Foundation) technician for optimum picture and longer set life (most TV's are factory set too bright and will burn out more quickly over time). And be sure to connect the DVD player with COMPONENT (i.e., the three wire arrangement), again for optimum picture.
All this is trying to recreate a film-like experience. Good luck!
I just went through the process of buying my first widescreen.
The first TV that caught my eye was the Samsung DLP's.
Then I hit AVGUIDE.com Quickly lost my intrest in them. Then I heard all about how good the Pany Plasma was. Nice but they run hot and make noise. Besides PC Richards had on display a Sharp LCD. (unbelievable picture!) BUT! I have always read about stuck pixl's. Never had much thought about how bad can 1 stuck pixle look. Well it had 1 and only 1 right in the middle of the screen. A walk away and never looked back. They won't replace your set for 1 pixle. You'd be stuck with that 1 defect staring you right in your face all the time.
With closed loop HDTV signal the DLP's & the Plasma's were Stunning.
The old direct views were always a distant second. That was until I had them disconnect the Pany from the HDTV feed and hooked it up to the same cable feed they give the direct views. Bye bye Plasma's, bye bye DLP's, Hello direct views.Sony or even the Samsung DV widescreen is the way to try.
GTF
47" widescreen, HDTV capable which I'm pulling in (OK, six stations' worth) re: my local cable company, gorgeous picture with ISF calibration, fairly thin cabinet, the latest model is right in your sweet spot budget-wise.Fed by a Panny RP-91 and the aforementioned HDTV cable box, picture is stunningly real and colorful. There are some excellent and quite small surround speakers, so you can experience the full glory that is 5.1 or 6.1 sound (don't try this at home for DVD-A or SACD, though).
...head on over to avsforum.com - there's more there than you can read in a month, but it's the video/HT equivalent of AA.RPs are gonna be dinosaurs soon but they're wonderful bang for the buck these days. You have something to look forward to.
I love my HDTV and DVD player. (Philips 9818 & Panasonic RP91).
Ok, I just checked out AVS, and I'm sure there is a ton of useful information to be had, but I could never wade through it, and the colors are too much! Yikes.
Thanks, I'll clear my calender and head over there. When you say dinosaurs, do you mean I shouldn't buy one? I'd love to have a projector, but don't have the right room and will be moving several times in the next couple years, and I can't swing the cost of plasma right now (plus I'm concerned about longevity). Given those constraints, would you go RP right now?
