Does anyone know of a current surround sound processor that does not have a pre-amp built into it? This type of item may not exist, but I would appreciate any feedback if anyone knows of someone making this type of processor.

I know that they do exist, but they are definitely a higher end beast and probably unnecessary for the vast majority of home theatre. Unless you're in a situation where you want individual power amps (3 2 channel amps for a 6 channel system, and then the sub) I can't see where it would make a lot of sense. There are some home theatre receivers that have preouts for everything. I know that my Denon has this and I'm sure that a lot of other brands and models have this as well. If you wanted to, you could just buy a used receiver with blown power amps and use that as a processor. Otherwise, just buying a full receiver is probably your best bet.
Yes they do exist, but I know of no currently produced models. I have used the Rotel RDA-975 and one of the Sony decoders with good results. These are available secondhand for a reasonable cost. It should be noted that some of the decoders (such as the Rotel) do not allow for channel level adjustments which then must be made at the preamp or amp. Good luck!
