Anyone have the Sony DVD 850 200 CD/DVD changer? I think I would just by it because of its DAC, so I can play all the 24/96 DVDs and high bit rate CDs at one sitting. For movies I have the Sony 7700.Thanks in advance for your replies...
Joe
Hi Joe,Check out the Pioneer F727 . I own the Sony 850, and I have had the Pioneer 525 and a Pioneer Elite receiver in my system at one time, so I might be able to make some general comments.
I am very satisfied with the Sony 850 performance on video, scanning, chapter changes, etc. The video scanning is superior (by a huge margin) to the Pioneer 525, and the lip sync accuracy is near perfect. However, there is only S-link one-way computer control for the the changer.
The Pioneer F727 looks like the computer control *may* be superior, *may* pass digital 24/96, and is a 50% larger changer to boot. I do not know if the video scan features have improved. The F727 uses Burr-Brown DACs, which *may* be the same Burr Brown DACs as in the Pioneer Elite receivers which I have heard in my system (using pre-out). In my opinion, the Pioneer Elite receiver DACs are outstanding for the price range - excellent air and definition and perhaps slightly better clarity than the 850D, which in turn, probably will show better warmth and body.
YMMV... if you have a chance to directly audition the F727 and compare with the 850D, please let us know! I'd definitely be curious on the above points, and who knows, it might be time to upgrade :-).

Hey Andy,I have the 850 also. I love the sounds that come out, but my 7700 sounds a bit more clearer(but I'll take a changer anyday for one sitting listening). I'm curious, have you tried using the "Wide Range" filter for stereo? I don't know if this filter in unrestrictive for playback or just adds an echo or reverb affect to the music. However, the manuel states that with higer fidelity speakers the sound will be more "lifelike" under the "widerange" setting.
This is my second changer and I can say that the human factors of the 850 are all messed up. You have to turn on the TV to see whats on disk explorer. When disk explorer is on, music isn't. The memory for the picture icons is low so when it loads it takes loooong. The CDtext is a major step down from other models and no longer displays the songs titles. And last, one of my DVDs got jammed and it got banged up in there.
It has some pluses but they are normal things that a CD/DVD player should have.joe
Hi Joe,I really haven't checked out all the different CX850 audio options -I just use standard/dolby digital out for my Classe preamp. Just for kicks, last night I did briefly play with the Wide Range in the downmixed 2ch mode (both analog and digital) for CD stereo playback and didn't notice much of a difference. Of course, it's quite a few buttons to push to switch so I wasn't able to instantaneously compare and I was too lazy to program up my pronto. Wide Range may only be a DVD dolby digital feature, perhaps something related to the "dynrng" "dynrng2" "compr" "compr2" and "dialnorm" inband volume control variables in sections 7.6, 7.7, 7.8 of the Dolby AC-3 standard - can anyone from Sony comment?
I definitely agree that the CX850 is an ergoklutz. Loading the older CX300 CD changer is much easier: the door automatically swings open, so you don't have to pull down the entire front panel. Also the CX850 is somewhat sensitive to being moved: a lot of people have reported jam problems with the CX850 after they moved the player with discs in the tray.
