I need to buy a cheap DVD player for someone for XMAS in the $50- say $80 range. They are not audio or videophiles but I don't want to buy something that won't work in 3 months or that performs like s!!t. Can anybody recommend one that is "surprisingly good" for the money? There are so many available!

I'm in the exact same position as you are and my instincts tell me that it's a toss up in this price range. I don't have any insight on what unit has competitive advantages, but I can share how I am going about my search. I simply went to ecoustics.com and let the site search within my specified criteria. Amongst the units found and based on known budget players at local mass marketers, I will probably purchase from the establishment that makes returns the easiest. Maybe Costco or Walmart. What are you planning to do?
again this Sunday and then go buy one. There are so many stores selling them, even our local grocery stores!! Some are recognizable names but many I've never heard of. I think I remember a Toshiba for $69. I think I'll probably go with that since I have a 3 year old Toshiba that hasn't hiccupped once and whose performance I feel is more than adequate, knock on wood! You're right, I'll probaly get it at Wally World or Target or the like.
