In Reply to: Adding 6th channel to 5.1 rig - any experiences? posted by Larry S on December 06, 2003 at 13:48:35:
Not sure what you meant. You can not upgrade the Proceed AVP; but you can still buy the Proceed AVP2 ?I thought about upgrading but the upgrade to the AVP2 did not include multichannel (MC) analog bypass (they re-digitize the 6-channel input perform PCM-based time alignment/Bass management and reconvert to analog. Supposed to be very good but kind of eliminates most of the benefits (?) of DSD/SACD).
There was a processor and DAC upgrade which made it a better preamp (but not near as good as the MC analog preamp I eventually bought). The processor upgrade allowed for DD/DTS 6.1 but the limited availability of 6.1 software did not justify spending >2K$ IMHO. Pro-Logic II,"Neo" (?) and other surround modes didn't exactly float my boat either.
6.1 was one way to plug the sonic "hole" in the rear of my sitting area. The other which probably works better for my situation (26x19 room with French doors exactly where the rear center would have been placed), is to use the AVP's built-in 7.1 mode. This would allow me to put 2 speakers further back than where my current rear speakers are now. I have not tried this yet' I'd need another pair of speakers/amps. It would also "clash" with my "ITU-standard" hi-rez MC setup.
I'll eventually get a new processor and it WILL include 6.1, 7.1 (or more?) to allow for (presumably) a more "immersive" HT experience.
Follow Ups:
I called Lexicon and asked to speak to the Proceed support.
I was patched through to someone who told me that the factory has suspended doing any additional upgrades to AVP2 status at this point, as they have xferred the Proceed support to Lexicon's office and are trying to figure out things. I asked when they would start doing upgrades again, and he didn't know.I guess that you might still be able to get an AVP upgraded by a dealer, but I haven't looked into that. If I were to have done the upgrade, for that amount of money I would have wanted the factory to do the work.
I bought an ADA6.1 decoder at ebay, and will be hooking it up to the AVP this weekend.
