My viewing room is approximately 14' x 12' in which I sit about 10' from the TV. I'm looking at maybe a 42" - what would be better, plasma or LCD? Also, what is the best "budget" brand I should consider? Budget meaning the best buy for the money, not necessarily the most expensive. Would something smaller be more appropriate for my room size, say a 32" or so?

Hopefully I'm not highjacking this thread...Over the years I've invested far too much in time and money in my 2 channel system. Now I'm adding a HT room to my house, I feel comfortable with the audio component, but the TV - so many options. Is there a relatively consise expanation as to the advantages/disadvantages to the various display technologies? I see small projectors, front projection, rear projection, plasma, CRT, LCD - I sure some are better than others for different reasons. I certainly want HD & burn-in/price issues make plasma less than ideal (at least to me) - what are the relative merits of the projection genre?
you might want to specify the $ for your budget. One person's budget may be another person's divorce. Know what I mean?
:-)Check out AVS Forum for answers to many of your questions about each display type.
Joe,
I appreciate your replies to various person's comments. Tell us what you would buy: plasma or lcd. Say in the range of a 32-42" hdtv tv. Also assume no budget limit. Thanks for your help.
perhaps unrealistic, is in the $2,500 - $3,000 range. Anything worth considering for that amount? Or, must I wait until prices drop??
It's a fine TV at MSRP $2799. You should definitely give it a look.I covet this one myself.

For the distance you describe, you will need at least 42" or better for a decent viewing experience. On the "budget" side, Gateway has a decent ED plasma that might work for you. Pick up a copy of the Jan issue of Sound and Vision magazine. They have a listing of all plasma and LCD sets with prices and specs. It should help narrow your search. Also go to the either www.onhometheater.com or www.hometheaterhifi.com and check their archives for articles describing the pros and cons of each technology. I still think that at present, one's money is better spent on rear or front projection either with CRT or DLP. LcOS also looks promising but is still young like plasma. Good luck.
If you are going to spend the big bucks for a flat panel.I'll agree CRT or DLP is the way to go for now. Plasmas maybe in two (or more) years (re: cost). LCOS hasn't really left the starting line. The LCDs I''ve seen were not updating fast enough on football games (w/ lots of motion). big turn-off.
My apologies, the articles on the display technologies are at www.hometheatersound.com. Look under the "Features" tab. Since September, they have written about plasma, LCD, DLP and this month LCoS.
