I saw the XBR and the HS lines side-by-side over at Soundtrack and could easily see the difference in the better tube. Also saw the HS next to various other brands over at BB. In the end, I figured along the same lines as you and sprang for the big tuber. What a load of features to try to figure out.One thing I grappled with and rejected was the Circuit City extended warranty. Why pay them $80 for the first year when Sony gives a full year parts and labor?? I'll put it on a Panamax and cross my fingers. If it ever does go tits up (sorry girls), it will be a real challenge to lug it around w/o damaging it further though.
Follow Ups:
Congrats on the new TV.I recently purchased the Sony CRT KV-40XBR800 40" FD Trinitron from Tweeter. Formerly known around here as Bryn-Mawr Stereo. (16:9 movies are 37" corner to corner)
The darn thing is 306lbs and if it only goes two years, it wasn't worth the price. There's NO way I'm carrying this unit out for service!
The "extended" 3yr service agreement was worth it's weight in gold to me. This made it a 5yr "in home" repair service contract. They (Tweeter) have a good replacement policy if they can't repair the unit, were something unfortunate to happen.
(TV, stand and extended service agreement for just under suggested retail of the TV)
I think yours is a slightly newer model compared to mine and I believe that your DVI input is somehow better than the older model - I don't recall exactly. If you ever get an HDTV tuner you'll be pleasantly surprised with the incredicble picture quality from your big direct view CRT.
Yep, it's a heavy beast. Set it down once and never ever move it again. If you're in the area, I'll help you lug yours to another location if you help me with mine someday ;-)
I've moved my 34XBR910 many times. oops I forgot. :-)
I cheat. I put 14 2" ball casters under the bottom of the SONY stand.
It's easy to do and enables me to simply push it around the room.
Why 14 casters? Spreads the weight on them with most of the casters up front to support the front heavy TV.
My Sony XBR is on top of an A/V stand that isn't easily moved.
No, I never had mine professionally adjusted but I did use the Sound & Vision Home Theater Tune Up DVD by Ovation. I adjusted the 'movie mode' setting on the Sony TV using the DVD kit with the tinted mylar that you look through for adjusting contrast, brightness, color, and tint.
Just saw on the SONY website that the XBR color tv's have full 2 yr parts and labor. Now I'm doubly glad that I didn't pay for a 3 yr Circuit City warranty.FWIW, I'm talking about the 34" 16:9 XBR crt set. One of the better features in addition to the tube is a 30 watt sound system built-in, which has a mock surround mode that sounds ok.
Definitely worth checking out for someone who wants a nice, reliable tube tv with great picture, great off-axis clarity, and maybe is not going to be hooking it up to a full HT system and can therefore use the built-in sounds to best effect.
