Looking for suggestions on the absolute best DVD player for video reproduction. Not interested in audio, sacd, mp3, DVD-R, etc. Bells and whistles unimportant. Currently have a Panasonic RP91, Homegrown Audio solid silver component cable connection (also have Bettercables' Silver Serpent), to a 36" Sony Wega HDTV. Just interested in quality of playback of rented or purchased DVD movies. Can I do better than the Panasonic? Any recommendations welcome. Thanks.

Any of you seen the Samsung DVHD931, which will output a 1280x768i from any standard DVD? Its DVI output to my Sanyo Z2 projector gives a gorgeous 100" image from any widescreen format disc.
The best picture will come from a DVD Player with a DVI connection out. Bravo and Samsung are currently the only players with the straight digital output. Numerous mnufacturers to do so this year. Until DVD goes High Definition, the DVI out is the only way to go above 480I.Check the discussion:

Remember you asked for the best- take a look at the Krell DVD Standard, probably as good as anything on the market right now. It will cost you $8K
The Camelot Roundtable was a favorite video-only player in the Secrets of Home Theater shootout. Cost is significantly higher than the RP91, which also did very well in the shootout.
The Roundtable should be well down in price by now. I believe it was introduced late 2000, and well reviewed in 2001. Not sure if there are new units still being made, but yeah: it looks to be one of the best.
There are two earlier Panasonic models, XP-30 and XP-50, which are supposed to be the pinnacle of current DVD reproduction due to a superior chip which was "dumbed down" in later models. These can be found used. The onlt difference is that the XP-50 also plays DVD-A
discs as well, something you said you weren't interested in. Both are progressive scan players.
Any of the Pannys mentioned, including the RP-82 & 91 using the Immersive SDI output into a Lumagen Pro SDI input will easily beat the Camelot--as good as it is.(An Italian outfit has fitted an SDI output to the new Denon high-end player with outstanding results, according to them. Unfortuntely, Immersive will not mod the Denons.)
I had the Camelot for a number of years and now have both the SDI modded RP-82 and 91.
These setups will astound you with their quality output, both on an absolute and cost/performance basis.
