Using the zoom feature on my new Shinco DVD player, I have confirmed that my TV (a Samsung 25" TV with regular picture tube) does not display the standard "unzoomed" or 1x image properly. When I zoom out to 1/2x, I can see content on the sides of the image that are cut off when I zoom back to 1x. With older films originally shot in 4:3, there is also some loss at the top and bottom at 1x. What's more, the image at 1x is slightly off-centre, as I was able to confirm with the "THX optimizer" test patterns on my DVD of ALIEN.I'm convinced this is *not* a problem with my DVD player, as I still have my previous unit (an entry-level Samsung) and the image exhibits the same problems.
The loss of image is slight--about 5% on each side, a little less than that on the top and bottom for 4:3 images, but it is enough to detract from the cinematography. Zooming out to 1/2x for every film is not a solution, as too much of the TV screen ends up unused. To look right, the 1x image size would only need to be shrunk very slightly. Is there a way to set some internal controls in the TV to do this? If so, and if this information is contained in the Service Manual (assuming I can get my hands on one), is this something I can do myself?

All crt based sets incorporate many (a dozen or so, at least) controls which determine the placement of the image on the faceplate (screen). Most of these controls are interactive, meaning multiple iterations of the adjustment procedure are required to obtain the most accurate results.Since the electron beam is magnetically deflected, some of the adjustments are the moving of physical components (coils and magnets). Other adjustments involve compensating for the differing physical position of the electron guns in the picture tube.
Doing a total convergence and alignment adjustment involves centering the image, controling its dimensions, adjusting for both horizontal and vertical linearity, (Ever seen lines of scrolling credits squeeze or expand at the top or bottom the the picture?), convergence, focus, grey scale tracking. Ideally you will need a source of test patterns, from a single dot to cross hatch to color bars.
With factory service manual, a signal source and a half day, you might be able to DIY, but... it might also look worse. Good luck.
