The LDS-2 is legendary but was surpassed by the 404, 79, 95, amd 97
in terms of both sound and picture quality (some of these had Dolby Digital (then called "AC-3") as well). Of course NOTHING comes close to the build quality of the LDS-2. But the players I cite offer both side play and some play CDs, two features the LDS-2 lacks.
I don't believe that the Pinoeer combi player (LDs and DVDs) are as good as the player I cite above.

Thanks Rico,
Your information is extremely helpfull to me.
The other players you mentioned look intresting and i will deffinatly check them out,Thanks.Maybe the weight of the LDS-2 is beacuse of the copper shielding?'I am not shure.
The combi player weighs very little and has a single copper chassie and not much other shielding.
Thankyou,
Ian.
You are welcome. I had (still have) an LDS-2 for years. When I saw the laserdisc era ending, I bought an Pioneer Elite CLD-79 as a backup in case anything happened. I was surprised to find out that the picture and sound on the new model surpassed that of the LDS-2. So the '79 became the main player and the LDS-2 is in the closet as the backup. The '79 has Dolby Digital, both side play, and a separate drawer for CD play which, when engaged, disconnects the video cirduitry for truly high end CD sound. So the -79 does double duty in my HT and eliminates the need for a separate CD player.
