Something is wrong somewhere. Are you sure that the component cables are hooked up correctly? They should produce a higher quality picture than "S", especially when connected directly.

Although a component connection is supposed to be better, in practical terms I'm not sure it is. As a video production professional I've given some close attention to this, and I've not seen an appreciable difference in playback quality between component and "S". However, YMMV.On the other hand there's no way component should be visibly worse than "S".

Hi;Thanks for the corroboration. I wouldn't say that the PQ was "visibly" worse than S - perhaps it was just the fact that I was expecting a much better picture after reading all the raves about component. They actually are about on par with each other.
It all depends on the devices being connected together. On my laserdisc to TV connection I use a composite cable rather than an "S"
because the comb filter in the TV is better than the one in the player, something I discovereed by A/B-ing the picture from both.
