For lack of a better term, this is what I'd call it. I've noticed on DVDs of some color films from the 40s and 50s that the color seems to shift from warmer to cooler, then back every few seconds. Does anyone know what causes this? The films I've seen it on were restored (I think) and I wondered if it was an artifact of the restoration.
Follow Ups:
...what you describe (and I like your term!) is probably due to the quality of the source rather than the restoration process. In fact, it suggests that the restoration itself was light and aimed for global improvements rather than the more demanding, but more rewarding process of doing a frame-by-frame color correction.I have noticed this too on a few rental DVDs--what movies are we talking about here?

My wife rented Brigadoon last weekend and I noticed it had the problem. I believe The Black Narcissus also did it. There have been others, but those two come to mind. I think they were both Technicolor films, As you suggested, they probably weren't frame by frame restorations. Therein might be the problem.
Is the "Black Narcissus" the Criterion DVD version? Because my copy is a stunning renaster.
I could be remembering wrong because it was a rental, but I thought their TBN was a Criterion. I could also be wrong about TBN being one that does this color thing. We don't have cable so it's not unusual for us to rent 15 or 20 DVDs a month. Brigadoon was definitely doing it though. I've seen at least a half dozen that have the problem, but need to start writing down which titles do it I guess!
