Will your future HDTV have a digital input? Most probably it will, so it might be a good idea to get a DVD player with either a DVI or an HDMI output. This way, the digital video from the DVD will stay digital throughout the processing in the display for a better picture.Here are some options that are close to your $300 goal: Bravo D2 and D3, Samsung HD841 and HD941, Panasonic S97 and Momitsu V880. If you check out the DVD Hardware section at avsforum.com, there's plenty of information available about these players.

Yes, I'll want DVI. I've checked AVS but those guys really get into deep details I don't much understand.
