I went deep into the Denon 5900 setup and played around with it a little more tonight. Set the IRE to 0 and black level to +1 then recalibrated my Sony 34" XBR in Movie mode using a calibration DVD from Sound & Vision (Ovation Software). Adjusted contrast, color, hue, sharpness. The picture looks fantastic!I also compared the component video input at 480p vs DVI at 720p. No contest! The upscaled signal via DVI at 720p is great!
I thought I liked 1080i but on this set I noticed a very slight intensity 'pulsing' or modulation in darker scenes, almost like a slow beat frequency interference on screen. Thought it might be 60Hz interference from somewhere.... not sure but at 720p it's not there and still considerably better than 480p over component video inputs. It's not quite HDTV but a big improvement over standard 480p. Thanks everyone for the pointers on getting the DVD5900 set up. It may not be perfect yet but it looks very very good to my untrained eye.
Here's another interesting bit for you Sony XBR owners. With the Movie mode calibrated per the calibration DVD, the brightness and everything in Movie mode is identical to the factory preset Pro mode EXCEPT that in Movie mode things have a little 'warmer' look.... Pro mode is a bit 'cooler'.
Going from the DVD-2900 to the DVD-5900 was worth it not just for the improved audio but more significantly, the improved video performance. I'm a happy camper.

Hi Abe!Congrats on your findings! Awesome, huh? :-)
The 'pulsing' on 1080i on your screen is interesting. I've honestly not encountered it on my screen. I wonder if it may be the power. My system is fairly well shielded. I have an ExactPower EP15A to lock in 120 volts which supplies a PS Audio Power Director. The PD gives me balanced power and always supplies 120 volts. My XBR is plugged into the PD. The 5900 is plugged into my PS Audio PP300.
Hmm, it is interesting that the Movie mode gives a slightly 'warmer' picture than the Pro setting with identical adjustments. I wonder if it's the red push that I spoke of before. It may also be a difference in the settings only accessible in the Service Mode of the XBR. I'm not sure if the two settings have different Service Mode settings. I recall reading over on Agoraquest.com (Sony site) over a year ago in disabling the red push in the Service Menu...hmmm and double hmmm.
BTW Abe, have you tried changing the "Pure Direct" (for audio) setting accessed through the Mode button on the player? If not, try the setting on 'All Off.' This turns off all video and digital circuitry. In my system, the background becomes blacker giving more ambience retrieval and a deeper soundstage as well as improved layering.
Happy Listening and Viewing.
Hi Ken - My AC power for the home theater is a mess right now. I have various different pieces, some plugged into a Monster power strip, some plugged directly into the wall. My PS Audio P300 is not in the system at the moment. I might try the 5900 on the P300 just for kicks. I don't think my 1080i pulsing video issue is related to the 5900... I *think* it's my Sony and/or AC power but I'm not too concerned for now as 720p is looking great. No, I haven't tried Pure Direct mode yet for audio as I've been focused mostly on video performance up to now. Also, I'm not really set up for multichannel audio except for what is available via the digital output as this gets routed to the Denon A/V receiver. I should gather up a few more RCA interconnects and get the multichannel capability set up as well.
