In Reply to: any harm in using Sony playstation with Plasma Tv's? posted by green lantern on June 22, 2004 at 12:24:54:
If you play games with fixed "frames" or "borders" and play for long times, these areas can burn-in on your plasma, just like when side bars can burn in if you watch letterbox stuff on widescreen TV.If all you play are games that have constantly changing background, you should be fine. I still play games like Tetris on my PS2, which has borders on sides still. But then again, I don't have a TV that can have burn-in..

thanks Jon, and that's what I figured. My son wants to use his PS on the plasma but I wasn't sure of any side effects (other than burn-in). Thanks again-

There are many "gamers" that use plasmas for video games. Their advice is to take a break every once in a while (IE: don't play for hours on end with static image games). Switching to non-static images (regular TV, the news, etc) while you're taking a leak or getting something to eat keeps the risk down.By the way, the black or gray bars don't cause the burn-in: it's the fact that these areas experience less useage compared to the active portion of the picture. What is actually occurring is uneven wear on the phosphors. The area with the least amount of use stands out.
A properly calibrated display (with at least Digital Video Essentials or Avia) mitigates much of the burn-in risk. Excessive Contrast levels are the greatest threat to plasmas and CRT displays.
