I have a dilema of sorts. I need to get a tv to replace the Sony 36 inch (4 : 3, 6 yrs old )in my living room which is relatively small (18 x 14) I am in a NYC apt which has lots of windows and very bright with sunlight for most of the day. My budget is around $3000-3500. The only plasma that I've seen that I like are the Sony XBR's which are currently out of my price range. I was contemplating getting a Sony XBR 34 inch direct view 16: 9 but heard that they are perhaps a dying breed, thought the picture has been awesome when I was in Circuit City. The other two being considered are the Sony Grand Wega 42 inch and the Samsung DLP. However, I heard the 3rd gen. DLP chips are much improved, has anyone seen one of these sets? I don't really want a tv larger than 50 inches and smaller than 40 but if all else fails, I would go with the 34 inch direct view I guess. Are there any others I should audition? We look at mostly cable so I wanted something that would show analog sources fairly well. Thanks for any input.
Follow Ups:
I recently saw a pair of 50 in. Samsung DLPs side by side, one a 2nd gen & the other a 3rd gen. VERY little difference in picture, almost none.
The upcoming HD2+ chips IMO will NOT be the Holy Grail, Improved CR from 1500 to 2500 will be small in a DLP. The new HLP Sammy have a soft picture compared to the older HLN sets, some like, some do not. I am getting a Sony 60" GWIII this week. Had a new Sammy HLN 5065, died after 3 weeks, Sony has probably the best SD pic over other LCDs and especially over the Sammy DLPs. Considered the 60XBR but the protective screen is just to reflective for our room.P.S. Local B&M is matching an online price, just hit the right store at end of month, Mgr. needs extra $$$$ so he gets his monthly bonus.
I had a Hitachi 50V500 for another 3 weeks(loaner) sucks IMO and color and looks are cheesy IMO. I am in on the Sammy powerbuy at AVS for the Sammy 61", If Sony craps out will return and go with PB.
If you don't mind the smaller size, direct view CRT like the Sony is still a great choice as well as many others. If you want bigger, the non-XBR Sony RPLCD's are great, especially since they have a pretty good anti-reflection screens. I can watch my Sony in daylight pretty well due to low reflections. XBR Sony's have a mirror-like screen, which cannot be watched well in sunlight. Also, be careful about the 3rd gen digital chip, HD3. The jury is still out as many who have switched rom Samsung HLN (HD2) to Samsung HLP (HD3) have expressed unhappiness and have gone back to HD2. Some people feel the HD3, while smoother, has less sharpness, resolution. HD3 is a economical replacement for HD2, not necessarily a quality improvement. The upcoming HD2+ chip is supposed to be the actual improvement.
I think you will have good luck with the direct view which is a tried and true technology. I just replaced a 25 year old 27 inch Sony console with their 46 inch projection unit. It has a very nice pic and doesnt dominate the room, in fact it fits in the spot the console sat. A lot less money--I got mine for $1350. SAve the rest of your cash and you can get a LCD or plasma in 5 years when they get the bugs worked out.
