I've owned the Magnepan MG-CC1 for about a year now, and overall it's
a very good center channel speaker. I have Acoustat Spectra 22's front
left and right, and the pan between these speakers is very smooth and
clean. What I have is a very clean integrated soundfield all across
the front....Movie dialog is incredibly clear -- unless of course it's someone that
has the habit of mumbling their lines. No speaker can help someone like
Brando enunciate clearly :-)I have a growing collection of music/concert DVDs, and as with all
Maggies, reproducing the sound of voices is its forte`. The center channel
of the Eagles' Hell Freezes Over presents each voice of the harmonies as
a seperate entity... That is to say you can hear the voices perfectly
blended, yet still tell which person is singing the individual notes. The one limitation I've heard so far is that it can lose focus at the
bottom of some male voices -- this is due to its lack of low frequency
extension, and a slight "gap" because of the crossover frequency I
needed to select for the best balance in my Home Theater setup.
Product Weakness: | Could use another octave of bass extension. |
Product Strengths: | Natural sounding voices, and instrumental timbres. |

I've heard of other people using one MMG as a center channel with good results. If that small freq. hole bothers you enough you might look into this as an option. It should be easy to find someone to split a pair with you.Richard H
then you'd have to deal with an ambient like image for the center, if you position it horizontally like the arced CC1. That's why I mounted my LR1s that way for my rears.
Placing both MMGs side by side vertically with internal tweeters, will keep the image closer & sharp. In lieu there of one must still position the single MMG vertically. It has to do with the width of a driver. The CC1s arc reduces the acoustic width via dispersion. BTW, both mounting something behind the speaker & positioning it laterally makes the sound duller. Corporately, it could prove disasterous.
Would putting something behind it (attaching something) help with that? Making it more like a monopole?Richard H
try a Krell amp. You'll be astounded just how understandable those mumbles can be.I didn't know it was a problem until I watched Private Ryan at my local audio store on their Maggie HT setup w/ Marantz MA300s (I think, they were the smaller monoblocks). I found it frustrating. I never knew Hanks mumbled?!
Anyhow, my home Maggie HT system doesn't do that. I've watched the same movie since. As far as I'm concerned, Krell was Saving Private system.
I think you misunderstood my post. I was describing a LACK of
indiscernible mumbles from this speaker. With on slight exception, that it lacks just a tad on the bottom of
some baritone and bass pitched men.Regardless of which amp I use, it will be an issue, because of the
rolloff inherent in the speaker, and the fact that I'm crossed over
at 100Hz, where the -3dB point on the MG-CC1 is 150 or so Hz.It's not the end of the world, but it is a minor shortcoming.
FWIW, I understood you the 1st time. It was my 1st impression too. That's why I bought one. Been there, done that. Don't get me wrong, I'm not discounting the speaker. I still love it. I'm just saying it gets better. Almost, wet dreams better. In fact, I've promised to buy my local dealer's demo for another & stack them with the 2 tweeters meeting. In that way, I can center the central image with an MTM configuration while supplying more surface area to increase its image. The current image size discrepancy with my MG2.7s is annoying. This ought to kill 2 birds with one stone & if the increased surface area happens to extend the bass into actually exhibiting some, so much the better.
However, after much searching for an amp carting around my MGLR1, I tried a Krell KAV & never looked back. You wouldn't believe how much the XO attenuates until you check it out for yourself. It's not my intention to demean your system. It is my intention to recommend trying a Krell. Not buy, Listen. Just listen, & then tell me I'm full of it.
Wish I had the $$$ to spend on the Krell amps. I lucked out to get
my CC-1 at $200 used. So I can't complain too loudly.I am looking at more power for the whole HT, about 200w/8ohms, 400 into
4... that should help from the current Marantz MA-500.....Leading candidate so far is the EAD Powermaster 1000 if/when it gets
released. Thanks for your thoughts, they have been helpful misundestandings or not ;-)
any others?
Sadly, there weren't. I was experiencing a very good "Audio Kharma"
day. I was in a local haunt, ok it was Saturday Audio Exchange --
I'd never been there before, looked up, and what did I see?The CC-1. Knowing I was going to build a home theater, I asked
what they wanted for it, knowing full well right up the street it
was $750. They wanted $200.Couldn't believe my luck. Got exactly what I wanted, saved over
$500....Way cool.
