Currently have a Kenwood VR4090 which I have been very happy with. Time to upgrade! Any advice for the best sound quality for both stereo and home theatre? I will be running external amps so I don't care about the amps, I don't want to pay for amps that I won't be using (7 channels) but find that straight processors cost so much more than a receiver and seem to off so much less.
Any advice?

I love my Rotel. Sounds better than my Linn Majic as a preamp for stereo (with Linn tri amped speakers) and can switch front channel amps to back to make seven channel system with built in five amps of receiver. One of the few receivers that will not degrade a good stereo system.
You've got to be joking. The Majik is leagues above Rotel...especially if the jumpers inside the Majik are configured to enable the unit to be used as a preamp only.
Look into the NAD T163 pre/pro ($1500)on their website. I replaced an Adcom pre/pro with it and the NAD is sweeter and more musical and offers a number of surround modes plus "straight through" stereo. It is very intuitive and user friendly as well. I mated it with the NAD 963 power amp ($ 2000, 140 wpc into 8 or 4 ohms). My all Magnepan system has never sounded better on either music or movies.
For processors, you can pay tens of thousands (Mark Levinson or Meridian) if you have the budget and get outstanding sound. For a beer budget, Rotel and Outlaw both make very nice processors. In the mid range you might get a used Krell HTS (5 channel versions are dirt cheap now) or Lexicon or Meridian 500 series. For straight musical "talent", I would edge towards the Meridian. I've had a 565/562v in the past (still have it, but it is in storage right now) and it is very nice for 2 channel sound reproduction.
Good point. I would like to keep it under $1,000. I am looking HARD at the Outlaw but it doesn't seem to decode 96khz signals? I had a few of the HDAD discs I would like to decode. I have seend a few Krells and those are appealing since they are five channel only and that is all I would ever want. Front speakers will be large (infinity intermezzo 4.1) so I am not too worried about bass management. I currently use a Panasonic RP91 in upsample mode for red book CDs so the 96khz issue is key for me.
Denon 3805.... One of the best new ones and can be ahd for about 1100 bucks (less than 1K if you buy B-Stock).It decodes HDCD, HDAD, Has great MC Analog inputs and offers supperb sound. It has dual Burr-Browns per channel. I really can't fault this receiver in any way.. If you pair it up with a high-end 2900 or 5900 universal players, you can use their Dlink connector whcih is trully awesome and will shortly also transmit SACD. It will handle 192/24 DVD-A signals.
I think in the 1K range, nothing can touch it right now.
Go take a listen to it.
How does it compare to the 3803? It is currently available for around $500 and has the same Dacs in the front channels as the 3805.I think it is either that or the Outlaw but I am still poking around. I need to pull the trigger in a couple of weeks.
i never heard the 3803, so can't compare the performance. I do know that the 3805 has the Dlink connector allowing you to connect the 5900 directly to it using only 1 cable to output CD, HDCD, DVD, DVD-A, and shortly SACD!.Been very happy with the 3805 so far.... Far and away better than the Sony ES receivers i have owned (and now sold!) in the past.
