At that price level it's probably best to go for an all in one "home theater in a box". As for the sub you will just have to experiment as all rooms and subs are different. Generally, however, it is not a good idea to place it behind you. When you set up, make sure all speakers are equi-distant from the listening/viewing position and set them all to the same volume level using the built in circulating test tones. If you are lucky enough to have or borrow a sound level meter use 75 db as the reference point.
The hardest part will be integrating the subwoofer in the sound mix.
Follow Ups:
All in one:In My experience Kenwood has a clean (HTB home theater in a box) system, as long as you get the larger last years sets.
Also, I found Home Theater Direct Middies (matched 5.1 and sub) paired with the inexpensive Only 5.1 receiver to sound very good. This is what I have in the Kid's family room and it is great for the money.
as for sub, I purchased a cheap 25'chord and placed it everywhere in the room until the unit sounded good to me and then bought an appropriate length higher quality cable. It just so happens with my room dynamic that is in the corner at the front of the room.
I meant Onkyo 5.1 receiver from CC. Onkyo also makes a total Home theater package that is readily available at CC that received GREAT online reviews
