All in one:In My experience Kenwood has a clean (HTB home theater in a box) system, as long as you get the larger last years sets.
Also, I found Home Theater Direct Middies (matched 5.1 and sub) paired with the inexpensive Only 5.1 receiver to sound very good. This is what I have in the Kid's family room and it is great for the money.
as for sub, I purchased a cheap 25'chord and placed it everywhere in the room until the unit sounded good to me and then bought an appropriate length higher quality cable. It just so happens with my room dynamic that is in the corner at the front of the room.
Follow Ups:
I meant Onkyo 5.1 receiver from CC. Onkyo also makes a total Home theater package that is readily available at CC that received GREAT online reviews
