I am attempting to transform my home theater from 1991 Dolby prologic (Sony STRAV-1020) to 5.1 Dolby digital and DTS.I bought a Panasonic SAXR10 receiver and a Toshiba 3950 DVD player from eBay, "open box" specials.
I have hooked the DVD player to the receiver with a Philips digital coaxial cable, but the receiver doesn't seem to realize it is there. Everything seems to work OK on both units using analog outputs and inputs.
Reading the manual for the DVD, (if all else fails...) I see there are two formats of coaxial output, bitstream and PCM. Toggling back and forth doesn't help.
I expect there is some extremely obvious step I've omitted and someone here can help me.
Follow Ups:
Don't own either, but found this on a quick google:"The receiver has Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 decoding for DVD or Sky+ sources (connected via optical inputs only, although there is a coaxial digital output)"
Maybe you need an optical cable between the two?

I have the receiver's manual only in .pdf format, and I somehow missed that this is a coaxial OUTPUT.I know it had to be something obvious.
I stopped at Radio Shack and bought a "Gold" house brand 3 foot optical cable for $13.99. Only problem, the Toshiba does not have an optical output, only a coaxial. Well I happened to have a Zenith/LG DVD player that does have an optical output. Everything now works fine.
Thanks.
