Don't own either, but found this on a quick google:
"The receiver has Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 decoding for DVD or Sky+ sources (connected via optical inputs only, although there is a coaxial digital output)"
Maybe you need an optical cable between the two?

I have the receiver's manual only in .pdf format, and I somehow missed that this is a coaxial OUTPUT.
I know it had to be something obvious.
I stopped at Radio Shack and bought a "Gold" house brand 3 foot optical cable for $13.99. Only problem, the Toshiba does not have an optical output, only a coaxial. Well I happened to have a Zenith/LG DVD player that does have an optical output. Everything now works fine.
